PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a preliminary defect and to achieve low floating height in the same environment as in operation regarding a method for detecting magnetic medium defect by a magnetic head which has a heater element for controlling the projection of the head. SOLUTION: The heater element (24) of the magnetic head (2) is heated by a predetermined power to control the floating height of the magnetic head (2) up to a preset floating height for enabling floating height with a low spacing to improve signal quality. Additionally, power for obtaining a different floating height from the preset floating height is calculated based on the predetermined power when detecting the defect of the magnetic recording medium, and the defect of the magnetic recording medium (3) is detected from the signal read from the magnetic recording medium (3) by the read element while heating the heater element (24) to control the magnetic head (2) at the different floating height from the preset floating height. The preliminary defect can be detected in the same environment as in operation, thereby contributing to improvement of reliability of the magnetic storage system. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
