PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the artifact where a moving object appears to vibrate. SOLUTION: Methods 200, 300 and a system 100 perform a trick mode on a video signal containing a plurality of original images. The method includes the steps 212, 312 of receiving a trick mode command and the step of selectively inserting at least one dummy bidirectional predictive image in a video signal using field based prediction to form a trick mode video signal. In one arrangement, each dummy bidirectional predictive image is a one-directional predictive image, and the method further includes the step of predicting each dummy bidirectional predictive image from a reference image. In another arrangement, the predicting step further includes the step of predicting each dummy bidirectional predictive image from a single field associated with the reference image.
