PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize an initialization of a PDP and high-speed writing thereof, to display an image with excellent quality, and to reduce power consumption. SOLUTION: A method of driving a display panel executes, in an initialization period, all-cell initialization for generating initialization discharge for all the discharge cells, or selective initialization for generating initialization discharge only in the discharge cell with a maintenance discharge generated in a previous sub-field (SF). In a maintenance period, at least two maintenance pulses different in rise time are generated. In an SF just before the SF for executing the all-cell initialization, a period for generating consecutively the plurality of maintenance pulses having a prescribed rise time is arranged to include the end of the maintenance period. In the SF just before the SF for executing the selective initialization, a period for generating consecutively the plurality of maintenance pulses having a rise time shorter than a predetermined rise time is arranged to include the end of the maintenance period.
