Provided is a method for manufacturing a magnetic recording medium, wherein foreign materials on a surface of the magnetic recording medium can be surely removed with high efficiency, a mask layer left on the surface of the magnetic recording medium does not stay, and productivity of magnetic layer pattern formation is high. The method has a step of forming a magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic substrate; a step of forming the mask layer on the magnetic layer; a step of forming a mask pattern by patterning the mask layer; a step of forming a magnetic recording pattern on the magnetic layer by using the mask pattern; a step of burnishing a surface of the mask pattern by using a polishing material; and a step of removing the mask pattern.
