Lightweight calcium carbonate constituted of fine aggregates. It has a BET specific surface area of 10-25 m2/g and has a pore volume, in terms of the volume of pores of 0-1,000 Å as determined by the nitrogen adsorption method, of 0.05 cm3/g or larger. The proportion of the volume of pores of 250 Å or smaller to the total pore volume is 25% or higher. The calcium carbonate has an oil absorption, as measured with liquid paraffin, of 100 cc/100 g or higher. When used as a loading material for printing paper, this lightweight calcium carbonate can impart excellent ink-absorbing properties and excellent opacity (in particular, opacity after printing) to the printing paper. |
