PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defect detection apparatus for precisely detecting a defect not larger than a size desired by a user without depending on a change and a fluctuation in a generation state of shading. SOLUTION: A size setting means 31A sets a size of a defect accepted by a size setting acceptance means 51, and a reduction ratio setting means 32 sets an image reduction ratio in response to the set size of the defect. An image reduction means 33 generates a reduced image by reducing an original multi-valued image reduced at the set image reduction ratio, a filter processing means 34 filters the reduced image for eliminating the defect in the reduced image, an image enlarging means 35 generates an enlarged image by enlarging the filtered reduced image at an image enlargement ratio corresponding to the reciprocal of the image reduction ratio, and a difference calculating means 36 generates a difference image obtained by performing a calculation of a difference between the original multi-valued image and the enlarged image.
