PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel having excellent whole surface corrosion resistance and used for a flange, piping, a joint and valve for a chemical plant, medical appliance parts or the like. SOLUTION: Disclosed is an austenitic stainless steel having excellent whole surface corrosion resistance, containing, by mass, 0.05 to 0.15% C, 0.20 to 1.00% Si, 2.00 to <5.00% Mn,≤0.050% P,≤0.030% S, 0.05 to <0.50% Ni, 16.0 to 19.0% Cr, 0.05 to <0.50% Mo, 2.5 to 4.0% Cu,≤0.01% O and 0.15 to 0.30% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and satisfying the following inequality and corrosion index: Ni+27C+23N+0.2Mn+0.5Cu-Cr-1.2Mo-0.5Si+10≥2..
