PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer where, even in the case constitution is made in such a manner that a thermal head is widely separated from a platen roller for easily performing maintenance, the position of a hook in an opened state does not check the exchanging operation of an ink ribbon, and the exchange of the ink ribbon can be easily performed. SOLUTION: The thermal printer comprises: a head locking lever 40 in which the tip part in the longitudinal direction is provided with a hook 41 and a rolling shaft 26 is rolled, and fitted movably in the longitudinal direction to the rolling shaft 26 and capable of changing the distance between the rolling shaft 26 and the hook 41; and a movement control means moving the head locking lever 40 in such a manner that the distance between the rolling shaft 26 and the hook 41 is made shorter in an opened state where the thermal head 12 is separated from the platen roller 11 than a pressed state where the thermal head 12 is pressed against the platen roller 11.
