PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine of high output efficiency owing to improved thermal efficiency. SOLUTION: A crankshaft phase setting means G optionally setting a phase of a first crankshaft 9 connected to a first piston 7 and a phase of a second crankshaft 10 connected to a second crankshaft 8 includes a first gear 15 provided on the first crankshaft 9 and a second gear 16 provided on the second crankshaft 10 and interlocking with the first gear 15, and is set to make the phase of the first crankshaft 9 and the phase of the second crankshaft 10 different for maintaining 3 of an expansion volume ratio to 1 of a suction volume ratio by setting a gear ratio of the first gear 15 and the second gear 16 to 2 to 1 under a condition that bores of a first and a second cylinder 2, 3 are the same and strokes of the first and the second pistons 7, 8 are the same.
