PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a four-cycle internal combustion engine capable of switching a lifting quantity to many stages in accordance with a driving area. SOLUTION: The four-cycle internal combustion engine 1 is provided with an intake valve 7, an exhaust valve 6 and a valve gear 8 for opening and closing both the valves. At least one of the intake valve 7 and the exhaust valve 6 is mounted by a plurality of pieces. The valve gear 8 is provided with first and second variable valve mechanisms 26, 26' for controlling at least one of opening and closing timing and the lifting quantity of the valves which are provided more than one to be switch-controlled to a plurality of stages independently for each valve.
