PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image projection device where loss of illuminating light emitted from a main light source is made as small as possible even when using an auxiliary light source which emits light of a wavelength band perfectly coincident with that of the main light source. SOLUTION: The main illuminating light emitted from the main light source 1 and sub illuminating light emitted from the auxiliary light source 19 are synthesized by a first wavelength separation element 5. The first wavelength separation element 5 includes a second area 21 having different characteristic in a first area 20. The main illuminating light emitted from the main light source 1 is reflected on or transmitted through the first area 20, and the sub illuminating light emitted from the auxiliary light source 19 is transmitted through the second area 21.
