PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method of monitoring cracks, aiming at reduction in cost and labor contributing to reduction in a crack control of maintenance of a steel structure. SOLUTION: A crack monitoring material 10 having an enclosed space 22 is firmly fixed to a structure 20, wherein a crack of the structure due to fatigue or the like propagates to the crack monitoring material 10, a crack 21 is formed integrally with the material 10 and the air enters the enclosed spaced 22. The air flowing into the material 10 is sensed by a sensing mechanism 26, thereby monitoring the crack generated by the fatigue of the structure 20 or the like. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
