A pattern feature extraction system scans a character with a linear array of detecting elements using relative movement transverse to the array, the detecting element outputs being sampled cyclically to simulate essentially a scan along the array, the slopes of the waveform from this and of the waveforms from the detecting elements being used to deduce character line slope. A character is moved horizontally past a column of photo-cells to produce analogue signal trains each of which is differentiated, then subjected to both positive and negative thresholds to detect steep rises and falls of ink density in the horizontal direction. The resulting signals are sampled and serialized into two trains (for rises and falls respectively) to feed circuitry for detecting horizontal, vertical, forward sloping and backward sloping line elements. This circuitry also receives two signal trains representing occurrence of steep rises and falls respectively of ink density in the vertical direction, obtained by sampling and serializing into a single train the original analogue signals from the photo-cells then differentiating and thresholding the train as above. |
