AN INSTRUMENT FOR USE IN A JOINT REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

An instrument (124) for use in a joint replacement procedure. The instrument (124) comprises a generally cylindrical shell (126) closed at one end arranged to receive a connector sleeve (64) which is adapted to connect a trial head (60) to a stem part (12) of an orthopaedic joint component which is intended for location in the intramedullary cavity of a bone. The shell (124) comprises at least one connecting means (134, 136) comprising at least one slot or protrusion for engaging a corresponding connecting means (122) comprising the other of the at least one slot or protrusion forming part of the connector sleeve (64) such that a rotational force applied to the shell (126) when coupled to a connector sleeve (64) is transferred to the connector sleeve part (64) for rotating the connector sleeve (64) relative to the stem part (12) of the orthopaedic joint component. Also disclosed is an assembly for use in a joint replacement procedure comprising the instrument (124), a trial head (60) which corresponds to the head (20) of an orthopaedic joint component, the trial head (60) having a bore (70) formed in it, and a connector sleeve (64) for connecting the trial head (60) to a stem part (12) of the orthopaedic joint component. The assembly may further comprise an orthopaedic joint component which comprises a head part (20), a stem part (12), and a connector part (38).
