<p>An orally-administrable medicament for the treatment of damage to body tissues, particularly surface tissues, and especially tissues of the eye such as the retina and the corneal endothelium, comprises an anti-oxidant reagent. The anti-oxidant reagent may comprise one or more anti-oxidant compounds and/or precursors convertible within the body to anti-oxidant compounds. Vitamins, such as vitamin A, C and/or E, are particularly suitable. Selenium and/or zinc compounds may also be present. Dosages are preferably significantly greater than an RDA of the anti-oxidant compound and close to the MDA. The medicament may be used to treat medical conditions or tissue damage resulting from surgical or medical treatment. In the latter case, it may be administered before, during and/or after the surgical or medical treatment. A corresponding topically-administrable medicament may also be applied.</p> |
