<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock resistant discharge lamp and a backlight. <P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp includes a power supply portion 4 on an end portion of a glass bulb 1 having a discharging space inside, and the power supply portion 4 is composed of a metal case 41 provided in a circumference of the glass bulb 1 and a soldering portion 42 formed to connect the glass bulb 1 with the metal case 41. The soldering portion 42 has a projected portion 421 projecting to an outer end side of the metal case 41. As to the projected portion 421, when its thickness is D, it is desirable to have a relation of D≥0.1 mm.
