MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording area separation type magnetic recording medium (DTM, BPM) which is optimal for reducing flying height of a magnetic head.

SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a configuration where a portion with a relatively high ratio of ferromagnetic material and a portion 13 with a low ratio of ferromagnetic material periodically exist in an in-plane direction in magnetic recording layers 6 and 7, and an average height of the portion with a relatively high ratio of ferromagnetic material from a substrate surface is higher than an average height of the portion with a low ratio of ferromagnetic material from the substrate surface. When the recording area separation type magnetic recording medium which relatively reduces the ratio of ferromagnetic material by ion implantation is manufactured, by etching an ion implantation portion in advance, the height after the ion implantation is made relatively lower than a portion where ion is not implanted.
