PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which picks out the same area even to the back regardless of a filing way of a both-sides original in the case that only the face of the original is range-specified. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is provided with a specifying means to specify a filing direction of the both-sides original. Image data of an area obtained on the basis of information of the range- specified face and information of the filing direction of the both-sides original is extracted as partial image data of the back.
