PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pattern type magnetic recording medium of which the manufacturing method is simplified, also, which indicates a good recording and reproducing property. SOLUTION: The atomic content of a ferromagnetic element at an ion implantation part is increased by implanting ions of the ferromagnetic element to the precursor layer of a second magnetic recording layer 26 of a magnetic recording medium having a first magnetic recording layer 24 constituted of crystal grain boundary consisting of ferromagnetic crystal particles and oxide, and the second magnetic recording layer 26 which does not contain oxide, using ion implantation method. By this method, a pattern type magnetic recording medium in which, in the second magnetic recording layer 26, a region 40 where the atomic content of the ferromagnetic element becoming a magnetic recording region is relatively large and a region 42 where it is relatively small are present in the intra-substrate plane direction periodically, is manufactured. Since volume of the ion implantation part is increased by ion implantation, distance from the substrate surface of the surface of the region 40 in which the atomic content of the ferromagnetic element is relatively large becomes larger than that of the surface of the region 42 in which the atomic content of the ferromagnetic element is relatively small.
