[Class 74 (ii)] A tubular plainknitted drop stitch fabric has courses 1 ... 3 of inelastic thread and spaced courses 4 of elastic thread under sufficient tension to draw the adjacent wales of the fabric into close proximity. The floats of inelastic thread extending between the knitted loops are composed of loops which have been allowed to unravel and allow the fabric to be stretched radially. The fabric may be employed in the top of a stocking, the leg being formed integrally with the elastic fabric top. The fabric may be knitted upon a multi-feeder machine or upon a machine having only one feeder. As described in connection with a multi-feeder circular machine employing needles some of which have two butts 8a, 8b, inelastic thread 2, 3, 4 only is fed at three feeders, and at the fourth feeder the elastic thread 1 is fed from a guide 10 at a higher position than the inelastic thread 1a which is supplied by a guide 12. In knitting the elastic fabric, all of the needles knit at three feeders, and at the fourth feeder the knitting cam 9 engages the butts 8b of the two-butted needles and lowers these needles so that they do not receive yarn, but cast off their old loops. The single-butted needles receive the elastic thread and knit. The resulting fabric is shown in Fig. 18, the loops cast off by the single-butted needles having unravelled to form floats. When the leg of the stocking is to be knitted, the guide 10 is made inoperative and the guide 12 introduced, and the knitting cam is partly withdrawn so that the lower, longer butts 8a of all the needles are engaged so that all needles knit at each of the feeders. An inelastic thread 5 may be fed in plating relation with the elastic thread 1, and when the fabric is taken from the machine the additional thread 5 will form loops 5a projecting slightly from the surface of the fabric to form an ornamental effect. |
