<p>A garbage compression machine capable of, after compressing garbage, retaining the garbage in the compressed state. A device for reducing the volume of garbage by compressing the garbage, the device comprising: a body section (2) for containing the garbage; a compression member (5) provided so as to be movable relative to the body section (2) in the direction of the axis thereof; and a fixing mechanism for fixing the movement of the compression member (5). The volume of garbage (W) can be reduced by inserting the garbage (W) in the body section (2) and pressing and compressing the garbage (W) downward by applying force to the compression member (5). In addition, when the compression member (5) is kept fixed to the body section (2) by the fixing mechanism, even if the force applied to the compression member (5) is removed, the garbage (W) can be retained in the compressed state as long as the garbage exhibits force trying to restore the volume thereof. Also, when the compression member (5) is fixed to the body section (2) and left in that state for a certain time, the garbage (W) does not swell even if the fixation between the compression member (5) and the body section (2) is released. Thus, the garbage (W) can be maintained in a state in which the volume thereof is fully reduced.</p> |
