PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a blackening phenomenon caused by the expansion of an arc in arc discharge transition, in starting a high-pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device including an AC output circuit (30) and an ignitor circuit (40) is constituted so that the AC output circuit includes a control part (35, 60) for outputting a drive frequency and a resonance circuit (36-37) for outputting a resonance voltage; the ignitor circuit includes an n-fold voltage circuit (41-46) for amplifying the resonance voltage, a discharge gap (48) for applying the output voltage of the n-fold voltage circuit thereto, a pulse transformer (47) having a primary winding serially connected to the discharge gap and a secondary winding serially connected to the high-pressure discharge lamp, and a voltage detection circuit (49) for detecting the breakdown of the discharge gap and the discharge start of the high-pressure discharge lamp; and the control part lowers the drive frequency from a first frequency (fs), and lowers the drive frequency to a second frequency (fa) and thereafter raises the drive frequency to a third frequency (fh') so as to be maintained when the discharge start is detected without detecting the breakdown.
