PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable valve gear which generates a sufficient intake swirl in a cylinder by, for example, repeating opening/closing operation of a first intake valve and maintaining a closing state of a second intake valve in a low load region to improve combustion and improve fuel efficiency. SOLUTION: The variable valve gear includes: a variable mechanism for changing operation states of the first and second intake valves 3a, 3b; a main swing arm 30 which is structured so as to transmit swinging force when a single swing cam 7 abuts thereon, and opens and closes the first intake valve; a sub swing arm 31 for opening and closing the second intake valve; and a connection switching mechanism 36 for connecting or disconnecting both of the swing arms in response to an engine operation state. When a swinging amount of the main swing arm is controlled to be less than a predetermined amount, the second intake valve is maintained in a zero lift state. When the swinging amount of the main swing arm is controlled to be equal to or more than the predetermined amount, the first and second intake valves are opened and closed together.
