PURPOSE: An image photographing method and apparatus of a portable terminal are provided to improve the convenience of a user by removing a separate image editing process. CONSTITUTION: A controller recognizes the photographing direction of a portable terminal(303). If a photographing signal is inputted, the controller confirms whether the photographing direction of the portable terminal is a reference direction(305,307). In case the photographing direction is not the reference direction, the controller converts image data(308). In order that a preview image and a stored image have the same form, the image data is converted. In case the photographing direction is the reference direction, the controller encodes the image data(309).
