<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous secondary battery high in capacity and favorable in battery characteristics, and a method of manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The nonaqueous secondary battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte where the negative electrode includes a negative electrode mix layer containing a material containing Li, Si and O as constituent elements as an active substance, the atom ratio x of O to Si in the material is 0.5≤x≤1.5 in the entire material and is 2.5≤x≤4.5 on a surface part of the material.
