PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus highly accurately and inexpensively detecting a toner image for a pattern for determination used for determination of color misregistration when toner images of respective color patterns are superposed on a transfer belt. SOLUTION: In the color image forming apparatus, a toner images 31 for patterns for determination of respective colors has a constitution in which a plurality of narrow width pattern toner images 35 are arranged along a moving direction D1 of a transfer belt at smaller intervals than a diameter of a spot SP of light applied by an optical sensor, the narrow width pattern toner images 35 having a smaller dimension in the moving direction D1 than the diameter of the spot SP.
