The method involves forming a reference signal (RS), which refers to a position of a cylinder piston at determined time. An impulse of ignition voltage of predetermined cylinders (1-12) is used as the reference signal. Pressure in exhaust-gas collection lines (AL1, AL2) is measured by pressure sensors (DS1, DS2). Pressure signals in the respective lines are evaluated over time based on the reference signal with respect to shortfall of a threshold value. The threshold value is produced from an average value of the pressure signals. A characteristic field is used as the threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a device for cylinder-selective detection of missing or imperfect ignition of a mixture in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, comprising an evaluation unit.
