The method involves passing a plate-shaped product (1) to a measuring position through liquid curtains (7, 8), which consist of determined measuring fluid quantity. Partial amount of the liquid curtains are absorbed and collected, where the partial amount of the liquid curtains does not strike on the product. The collected partial amount is measured by a sensor i.e. air flow sensor (10). A surface of the plate-shaped product at a control system (15) of a continuous system is computed by measuring values, which are measured by the air flow sensor. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining size of a surface to be treated of a plate-shaped product.
