PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce damage to a head slider caused when the head slider touches down to a disk in measuring clearance between the head slider and the disk. SOLUTION: The HDD temporarily reduces the clearance of the head slider for touch down in measuring clearance, thereafter the clearance is enlarged, and the clearance is maintained in the range of a value larger than that of the reduced clearance. A vibration of the head slider is monitored by the HDD. When the monitored vibration satisfies a predetermined standard, the HDD determines that the head slider and the magnetic disk are in contact with each other. Thus, contact time (the number of contacts) between the head slider and the magnetic disk is reduced, and reliability of a head disk interface can be improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
