PURPOSE: A vehicle rear monitoring apparatus is provided to enable precise rearward driving by converting a display screen to a top-view image when the distance between a rear obstacle and a vehicle is reduced below the reference distance. CONSTITUTION: A vehicle rear monitoring apparatus comprises a distance sensor(11), a rear camera module(12), a display unit(15), and an output image control unit(13). The distance sensor detects the distance between a rear obstacle and a vehicle. The rear camera module creates and outputs an image of the back of the vehicle. The display unit displays the image outputted through the rear camera module. The output image control unit controls the rear camera module to output a long-distance image of the back of the vehicle when the distance detected by the distance sensor is greater than the set reference distance and to output a top view image when the detected distance is less than the set reference distance.
