PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which has a simple configuration and prevents an insufficient amount of light at both end portions in a main scanning direction without causing cost increase. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus includes a light source formed by arranging a plurality of LEDs (light emitting elements) in the main scanning direction and a light guide plate 54 for guiding light emitted from the light source to the surface of an original document. In the apparatus, the thickness of the light guide plate 54 is made to be gradually thin from the center of the main scanning direction to both the end portions in at least the light-emitting surface 54b. More specifically, the thickness of the light guide plate 54 is made smaller gradually from a value Y2 of the center portion of the main scanning direction to a value Y1 on both the end portions (Y1<Y2).
