PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing device and a welding method capable of obtaining an excellent weld shape when executing the one side automatic welding. SOLUTION: The backing device 10 is used in a one side welding apparatus 1 of a steel plate E to be welded. The backing device 10 has a backing member 11 in which the total length L1 of the backing device 10 is the length equal to or more than that of a welding groove part of the steel plate E to be welded. The backing member 11 consists of a trough frame 41 arranged along a welding groove part M and a trough 40 which is fixed to the trough frame 41 with flux F being stored therein.
