PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for detecting the center part 5A of a position detection mark 5 (position detection area) in the conveying direction of a label continuous body 1 (printing paper), and detecting the center part of the position detection area of the printing paper for the printer, dispensing with adjustment or setting of a threshold level, irrespective of types or properties of the printing paper 1, to provide a device and a method for detecting the printing start position of the printing paper, and to provide the printer. SOLUTION: Taking notice that the printing start position 4A of each of label pieces 4 can be calculated only by detecting the center part 5A of the position detection area 5, and also, that determination whether the gradient of an analog waveform increases or decreases is necessary to detect the center part 5A, mutually adjacent detection levels of the printing paper obtained by a sensor at predetermined pitches of conveying the printing paper 1 are compared with each other, and also, the center part 5A of the position detection area 5 is detected based on the maximum value 39A of the detection signals output from the sensor.
