The method involves providing a magnetic valve (10) i.e. injection valve, with a valve element, which comprises a valve needle (20) and an armature (14) that is movable by an electromagnet. Opening movement of the armature is limited by an upper stroke stop (18). Movement end information i.e. impact information, of the armature and/or the valve needle is obtained at an end of the opening movement by evaluation of currents and/or voltages of an armature winding (12), where subsequent control of the magnetic valve depends upon the obtained information. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program having a set of instructions for operating a magnetic valve of a fuel injection system (2) an electrical storage medium for a controlling and/or regulating device of an internal combustion engine, comprising a computer program with a set of instructions for operating a magnetic valve of a fuel injection system (3) a controlling and/or regulating device programmed for operating a magnetic valve of a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine.
