PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device, an authentication system, and a method of controlling of a portable electronic device by which the time until transmission of a personal identification code is shortened. SOLUTION: The portable electronic device includes a first communication part 50 performing communication, an operation part 11 including a plurality of first keys to which numbers are allotted, respectively, a display part 21 displaying the number allotted to the first key that is operated, by operating at least one of the first keys, and a control part 45. The control part 45 controls a numerical string displayed on the display part 21 to be transmitted by the first communication part 50 to a sender of a personal identification code demanding signal when the signal received by the first communication part 50 is the personal identification code demanding signal, in the state that any of the first keys are operated in the state that a standby display is displayed on the display part 21 and a number is displayed on the displayed part 21 based on the operation.
