PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate wasteful consumption of power, without impairing the convenience of a user. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes a paper feed section; an image forming section for forming a toner image; a heating section, including a rotating body disposed in contact with paper; a fixing device having a varying mechanism for varying the heating width of the rotary body in the axial direction thereof; a plurality of temperature detectors having a regular mode, a low-power mode for decreasing power consumption as compared to the regular mode, and a sleep mode for decreasing the power consumption as compared to the low-power mode, and being used for detecting the temperature of the heating section according to a heating width; a paper-size sensor for detecting the size of paper accommodated in the paper feed section; and a control section for determining the size of paper and controlling mode switching, thereby controlling heating in the fixing device. When only papers corresponding to the heating width which is smaller than the maximum heating width is accommodated in the paper feed section, the control section makes the apparatus shift to sleep mode not via the low-power mode.
