The sensor (1) has a housing (15), and an evaluation device coupled with a transmission device and a receiving device. The transmission device transmits electromagnetic signal in the range of microwave radiation, and the receiving device receives signal reflected at water drop (11) on a windscreen (10) of a motor vehicle. The evaluation device determines phase and/or amplitude of the received signal and provides a signal depending on amount of water on the windscreen according to the phase and/or amplitude of the signal. The transmission device has an antenna connected with the windscreen. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting water drop on a windscreen of a motor vehicle.
