The device (10) has a laminar optical receiver such as multipixel detector (3) e.g. multi-channel plate, charge coupled device or position sensitive detector, and a faceplate mask (2) arranged in an optical path between a linear detection and ranging sensor (1) and the multipixel detector. The faceplate mask comprises two passage blinds (2.1, 2.2) and LCD. The passage blinds are formed by selective control of partial regions of the faceplate mask. The sensor comprises a storage device for storing calibration parameters. The hand-held device is connected with a display device (32). An independent claim is also included for a method for calibrating an optical sensor i.e. linear detection and ranging sensor.
