PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check the backlash of a worm shaft and a worm wheel without disassembling the worm shaft.

SOLUTION: The backlash between the worm shaft 12 and the worm wheel 11 is checked without disassembling the worm shaft 12 in a state that the worm shaft 12 is pressed in the axial direction and the both end sides of the worm shaft 12 are made to contact a housing 5 side by attaching a measuring lid member 31 instead of a lid member, which closes an opening 18.
