PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress leak into adjacent pixels and abnormal generation of dark time output. SOLUTION: In a state where optically generated carriers are stored in a modulation well 45 and the threshold voltage of a modulation transistor is changed by the optically generated carriers, a select gate voltage is applied to the gate electrode 6 of the modulation transistor of a selected pixel, a drain voltage is applied to the drain 33 of the modulation transistor of the selected pixel, a signal from the source of the modulation transistor of a nonselected pixel is interrupted by applying a potential to the gate electrode of the transmission transistor of the nonselected pixel, a signal modulation operation to detect a signal from the source of the modulation transistor of the selected pixel from the source of the transmission transistor of the selected pixel is performed by lowering the potential at the source of the modulation transistor of the nonselected pixel below the potential at the source of the modulation transistor of the selected pixel, and diffusion layers at the source and drain of the transmission transistor are reset by applying a bias lower than the drain voltage during storage to the source of the transmission transistor.
