PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner capable of effectively suppressing an allophone such as slapping sounds without a plunger repeatedly hitting a tensioner body side when a tension of an endless transmission element and a fluid pressure to be applied to the plunger vary. SOLUTION: The hydraulic tensioner 10 regulating a tension of a chain 34 with a chain slipper 35 according to a pressure applied from the plunger 13 includes a stopper portion 40 wherein the tensioner body 11 abuts against the chain slipper 35 in a state where the plunger 13 can retreat to a deeply inside of the tensioner body 11, on one of either a portion of the chain slipper 35 opposed to the tensioner body 11 near the plunger 13 or an opposed end face portion 11e of the tensioner body 11 opposed to the chain slipper 35 around the plunger 13.
