PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen production method by thermal decomposition of hydrocarbon accompanied by little CO<SB>2</SB>. SOLUTION: An adequate amount of oxygen is blown into thermal hydrogen obtained by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon and oxygen in a furnace, whereby part of the thermal hydrogen is further burned to raise the internal temperature of the furnace to 1,200-1,600°C, and an adequate amount of hydrocarbon is blown into the furnace and thermally decomposed to generate thermal hydrogen and carbon. The generated thermal hydrogen is fed into the next furnace, the temperature of the thermal hydrogen is maintained so as to similarly decompose hydrocarbon, and≥80% hydrogen can be obtained through a plurality of thermal decomposition furnaces.
