The method involves predetermining a limit value for combustion mixture supplied to a burner. The limit value is stored for a predetermined air ratio of the burner, where a range is defined by the limit value. Exhaust gas partial flow or fuel flow or secondary air flow is controlled as a function of a motor-driven air ratio such that the limit value is not exceeded. The burner is designed as a reformer for production of hydrogen from fuel and as a heating device for a catalyzer. The fuel comprises methane. An independent claim is also included for a controller for operating a burner integrated in an exhaust gas after-treatment system of an internal combustion engine.
