PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system fully correcting its chromatic aberrations and having an excellent optical characteristics; and also to provide a method for manufacturing an optical instrument and a variable power optical system. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system has at least a lens group G6, a first to sixth lens groups G1-G6 sequentially arranged from the object side, and each of the first to sixth lens groups G1 to G6 has a cemented lens. When the focal distance of the first lens group G1 is represented by f1, and the focal distance of the second lens group G2 by f2, this variable power optical system satisfies the conditions of the following formula: -(f1/f2)<3.98.
