A pipe compressing apparatus (10) has a frame (12) and a slot (34) disposed within the frame (12) for receiving a pipe (36). The apparatus (10) has at least one bar member (32) for pressing into the received pipe (36) to diminish the internal configuration of the pipe, thereby reducing or blocking any substance flow therethrough. The bar member (32) is connected to the frame (12) via drive means in the form of hydraulic rams (44), for example, to actuate the bar member (32). Preferably, the apparatus (10) has two bar members (32), with the space between the bar members (32) defining the slot (34) for receiving the pipe (36).
