PURPOSE: A virtual engine sound system is provided to improve recognition of a pedestrian for vehicles by generating a virtual engine sound through a speaker of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: An input unit(110) inputs a shift signal, a hybrid ready signal, and a HEV mode signal or an engine operation state signal for determining whether an engine is operated or not. A switch(120) selects virtual engine sound output modes of a virtual engine sound system. A control unit(130) controls an output of the virtual engine sound according to an operation of the switch. A sound source generation unit(140) generates the virtual engine sound. A sound source amplification unit(150) amplifies the virtual engine sound which is generated by the sound source generation unit.
