Electrochemical cell consists of an anode, a cathode whose active material is vanadium pentoxide, an organic electrolyte consisting of a conducting salt and a solvent selected from tetrahydrofuran, N-nitrodimethylamine, and dimethyl sulphite, and a chemically inert, microporous separator between the anode and the cathode. The anode is pref. composed an alkali(ne earth) metal esp. Li. The conducting salt is an alkali(ne earth) metal salt, pref. a Li salt.
