1276861 Sampling liquids; automatic analysis AUTOMATED ANALYZERS Inc 6 May 1969 [6 May 1968] 20539/69 Heading B1X A predetermined volume of liquid sample is obtained for analysis by a method comprising providing a pad, for example pad 56 on a tape 50, the pad being of predetermined volume and of a material of predetermined absorption characteristic, and saturating the pad with sample by a method including contacting the pad with a means for adjusting the liquid sample contents of the pad just to saturation. An excess of liquid may be added to the pad (Figs. 2, 4 not shown) and surplus liquid removed by touching a capillary to the pad. Alternatively liquid may be introduced to the pad from a liquid containing capillary or by means of a wick having one end in a container of liquid sample, when, it is stated, liquid uptake by the pad ceases when the pad is just saturated (Figs. 1 to 3 not shown). The pad may be of cotton, wool, rayon, nylon, cellulose, polyethylene, porous ceramic. In the embodiment shown, capillaries 110 holding liquid samples are mounted in holders (102) which are pivotably held at the periphery of rotatable plate 100. Rotation of the plate causes tipping of one of the capillaries into a vertical position, when a piston member (132) (Fig. 6 not shown) is applied to one end of the capillary to bring its other end into contact with the pad beneath. The sample passes through transfer medium tape 58 on to tape 60 which is reagent-treated or may be reagent treated in zone 78. The tape 60 may be washed, heated, dried in zone 78 then moves to read-out zone 80. |
