<p>A monomer of formula H2C=C(Ra)COOR where R is 1-30C alkyl and Ra is H or 1-3C alkyl is polymerised with the aid of an initiator of formula (I) where Rb and Rc are H or 1-5C alkyl; A is CH2, O or NH; and Rb and Rc are sited on different C-atoms of the ring; or an alkanolamine of formula (II) where Rd and Re are the same or different and represent H or 1-3C alkyl. The monomer may be MMA, BuMA. The catalyst may be morpholine, piperidine, diethanolamine. A modifier e.g. CCl4 may be present. Catalysts do not discolour any dyestuffs present in the reaction mass, nor do they tend to oxidise, crosslink or degrade the polymer. Polymn. is effected in bulk.</p> |
