An input system includes an interactive surface (122) which may include a display and an excitation means which includes e.g. a coil (150) for generating an excitation signal. A pointing device (e.g. a stylus, fig. 3) is adapted (the stylus may contain a switchable resonant circuit or radio frequency identity tag (RFID tag)) to respond to the excitation signal. An input condition is determined in response to detecting a contact point and a response to an excitation signal. The device may distinguish between finger and pointer interaction. The pointer may include a pressure sensitive switch (figure 3, 206) so as to enable or disable a resonant circuit. The system may thereby distinguish a hover (mouse over) interaction and pen down interaction. A pointing device is also claimed.
